TWELVE

This had been one long and exhausting day for Gemma.

Thanks to a car accident and a moving truck spilling half of its contents onto the road, it had taken her almost four hours to get home. After stopping at her apartment to drop off her bags and change into sweatpants, t-shirt and tennis shoes, she went to her shop to survey the damage once more. This time with a calmer mind. That hadn’t stopped her from still being pissed, but the call with the insurance company confirming they would meet her there tomorrow made her feel marginally better.

With nothing more to do there, she’d returned to her apartment and proceeded to clean. It was something she’d always done to soothe her mind. And today her mind had definitely needed soothing. Or rather, she’d had so much on her mind that she needed to sort through.

A few years ago, she’d moved into the high-end apartment building located just fifteen minutes from her shop in Dupont Circle. The one level, two bedroom was just enough space for all of her stuff. That’s what Gage had called all her hair supplies, clothes, shoes and books when he’d come down from New York to help her move in. Her brother hadn’t been living in Temptation at that time and she’d enjoyed the long weekend they’d spent together. Even if Gage had fussed and complained most of the time.

Tonight’s clean-fest had started in the kitchen, where she’d washed down everything from the cabinets to the floors before moving to the next room and then the next. By the time she’d collapsed on her bed completely tuckered out, it was eight o’clock and Morgan had called.

“Hey, just checking in. You left so fast this morning, I didn’t get a chance to ask you if everything was alright.” Morgan was a natural caretaker, just like Gemma, so the warmth that spread in Gemma’s chest at her sister-in-law’s words was welcoming.

“I’m good. Sorry for not texting when I got in. I just wanted to get over to the salon to see it again.”

Morgan sighed. “Oh, honey, was it as bad as you remembered?”

“Yep and then some,” Gemma had replied. “But look, it’s gonna be okay. The Lord didn’t bring me this far to leave me.”

Those words had never felt truer and Gemma had been reciting them all day. Her mother had said them a lot, which is why Gemma remembered them. There’d been plenty of days when Olivia had sat by the window in her bedroom or on the front porch of their house and sang old hymns. “They bring me comfort,” her mother had said one day when Gemma had asked her why she sat and sang alone. “You children do too, but there’s something about the Lord’s word that can’t be matched.”

And she’d been right, just like on so many other occasions. Now that all she had left of her mother were words and memories, Gemma held tight to them all, especially on trying days like this one.
